Two students make a poster. One says: “I need to finish this assignment.” The other says: “I want new students to feel welcome on their first day.” Same poster. Completely different purpose. The second student’s poster will be better because every design choice — colour, words, placement — is guided by a reason bigger than a grade.

REAL WORLD EXAMPLE
Think of the last time you made something that genuinely helped someone — maybe you explained a maths concept in a way a friend finally understood, or you decorated a room for a family celebration. That feeling of “my work MATTERED” is purpose. Now imagine feeling that with every creative project you do. That’s what purpose-driven design delivers.

Purpose doesn’t mean every project needs to change the world — making someone’s day slightly better IS a purpose

You don’t need to design a water filter for villages or an app that saves lives (though those are amazing). Making your grandmother’s WhatsApp photo album easier to navigate? That’s purpose. Designing a fun birthday card that makes your friend laugh? That’s purpose. Purpose lives in small acts of care, not just grand gestures.

At 12, your purpose might be: “I want to make cool graphics for my friends.” At 16, it might become: “I want to make learning more fun for younger students.” At 22, it might grow into: “I want to design healthcare experiences that reduce anxiety.” Your purpose isn’t fixed — it grows as YOU grow. And that’s exciting.

Before the Foundation Program, you might have said: “I like art” or “I’m creative.” Now you can say: “I understand visual composition, I can analyse any image, I know how to think about the people I’m designing for, and I have a purpose that guides my creative decisions.” That shift — from “I like art” to “I’m a creative thinker” — is the real outcome.

what TO DO
Pick a small, real problem — something annoying at school, at home, or in your daily life that affects more than just you.
Work through all 5 design thinking stages quickly:
1) Empathise: who is affected? Write 2 specific things they feel or struggle with.
2) Define: write the problem as a 'How Might We' question.
3) Ideate: write 5 possible solutions in 3 minutes — no judging.
4) Prototype: sketch or describe your best idea in 2–3 sentences (what it is, how it works).
5) Test: show your idea to one person and write down their reaction in one sentence.
